The first Danish Beatles fan club after the breakup of The Beatles was "Around The Beatles" in Vordingborg.
It was started by 22-year-old Søren Kjær who worked in the store 'Musikhuset' in Vordingborg, where co-founder Jørgen Sandbirk, 26, was a frequent customer. Eager to share their great common interest in The Beatles and find like-minded people, they published a trial issue of the club magazine "Around The Beatles" in February 1977, 100 copies were printed in A5 format. From issue number 1 in March 1977, the magazines were published 6 times a year. Membership/subscription was 40 Danish kroner annually. The magazine made it possible for members to buy and sell records, books, etc. The two founders were in London that same year to find topics for the magazine.
On November 20, 1977, a Beatles convention (the first after the breakup of The Beatles) was held in the Kirkeskovpavillonen in Vordingborg and in connection with that, “Let It Be” was shown in a special performance in Vordingborg Kino. 36 paying participants. Club members at the end of 1977: 120-130.
Magazine number 9, July 1978, was the last issue from Søren and Jørgen's hands.
Starting with issue 10, September 1978, the magazine was continued by Erik Lüthje Frandsen, born 1957, and Axel Ø. Knudsen. Same printing quality and format. And with the ambition of 6-8 issues until the end of 1979. No club activities are announced. The club's hometown was now Holstebro. The style was unchanged and the issues are consecutive from Søren and Jørgen's time. The last issue from Erik and Axel is issue 14, autumn 1979.
From the next issue, no. 15, from November 1979, the magazine is published from Nysted on Lolland. Per Therkelsen became the editor, but this is not mentioned in the magazine. Pure magazine publication, without club activities. The last issue of Around The Beatles was number 20, early 1981, although it is not advertised in the magazine. This four-page issue of the magazine was dedicated to John Lennon who had been murdered shortly before.
At Easter 1988, the name “Around The Beatles” was revived when the local radio station in Vordingborg, Radio Valde, wanted to set a world record for the Guinness Book of Records. The local radio station was supposed to play Beatles music continuously for 52 and a half hours! 15 volunteers with Bjarne Fehsted as the initiator were behind the record attempt, which started on Sunday, April 3rd, 1988. Søren Kjær and Jørgen Sandbirk were both heavily involved. However, Radio Valde never made it to the Guinness Book of Records.
